Cabrera Verde Forum

The Cabrera Verde Foundation was formed to work together with local  authorities

in the enhancement and protection of the environment in the Cabrera region.

 The Foundation is active in employing local residents.

 Its mission is to promote the importance of assuring a clean, healthy community;

 to keep our streets, roads and beaches clean, in addition to other projects.

Here is a short history:

What was done in 2004?

- Playa Diamante: with funds raised from our 1st fundraising dinner, Cabrera Verde and the Ayuntamiento de Cabrera (municipality of Cabrera) have restored Playa Diamante from a neglected beach to a location that is thriving and is being enjoyed by all.

- Playa Breton: Work is almost completed on the restoration of Playa Breton, a beautiful and charming cove of great historical significance. The funds for this project were raised through the generosity of individual donors.

- We have employed special workers to help keep the streets and roads of Cabrera clean.

- We have made a small donation to help finish a school in Playa Breton.  This is a high school built by Canadians with special classes being given on the environment.

What are the objectives and goals of Cabrera Verde for the future?

One of the most serious environmental problems that we are faced with at the present time is the proper collection and disposal of waste. Ever year we are disposing of more and more chemical and toxic waste. If something is not done about this problem in the very near future we will be faced with destroying our waters as well as creating more illnesses and disease.

This can only be resolved through education and with a proper disposal system in place. As we all know this is a very expensive venture but we have to start some place. Our goals for 2005 are to organize and structure a collection and disposal system, not just for the town of Cabrera, but for the surrounding rural areas as well. To make sure that garbage is not just dumped anywhere and that what is collected is disposed of at designated sites. Collection points will be designated on rural secondary roads and garbage will be removed on a regular basis.

The second phase of this project will be the separation and recycling of waste. This is no easy task but it has been introduced successfully in La Vega. The ultimate goal of Cabrera Verde is to have in this region an advanced disposal system so garbage will no longer be hazardous to our health and environment.

Financial support is always welcomed and needed. However, financing is only part of what is needed to accomplish these goals. To make Cabrera Verde successful it will require help and participation in the fields of education and in knowledge of available technology.

Your time and expertise are most important in making the Cabrera region a flag ship for other municipalities to follow
